In the future, Netflix could offer live channels and the option to bundle additional streaming services with a subscription. The company has reportedly already actively discussed additions like these in a bid to boost subscriber engagement.
What You Need to Know
- Netflix is exploring new features to boost engagement, including always‑on live channels.
- Similar to Prime Video, the company is also considering letting subscribers purchase other streaming services directly through Netflix.
- Netflix has already started testing live TV integrations in France, with plans to pursue similar partnerships elsewhere.
While Netflix remains one of the most popular streaming services around, it seems subscriber engagement is one of the metrics that the company is less than happy with.
Based on the most recent Nielsen data, Netflix saw its total TV share drop to 7.8% in April. This was down from 8.2% in March and 8.4% in February, and down significantly from the 9% reported for December 2025.
According to The Wall Street Journal, citing “people familiar with the matter,” subscriber engagement has becoming an increasingly frequent topic of discussion at the company, as have possible solutions to fix the problem.
One of the solutions that has reportedly been discussed is adding live channels. Unlike traditional live TV packages, these live channels would continuously stream franchise or genre-based content — similar to what Disney+, Paramount+ and Peacock already offer.
Speaking of those other streaming services, another potential solution to the subscriber engagement problem is bundles. Specifically, Netflix has considered launching what would essentially be a subscription store.
Similar to how Prime Video works, Netflix subscribers would be able to purchase subscriptions to other streaming services directly within the Netflix app.
While still understood to only be topics for discussions right now, Netflix has already started making some moves in this direction.
Last month, for example, Netflix announced subscribers in France are now able to stream live broadcasts from TF1, TMC, TFX, TF1 Séries Films, and the 24-hour news channel LCI, directly within the Netflix app.
“People have more entertainment choices than ever, so we have to consistently give them the best variety of TV and films in a seamless and personalized way,” said Greg Peters, co-CEO of Netflix last month. “Our partnership with TF1 brings together two strong, complementary content offerings in a world-class user experience, delivering even more entertainment value for our members in France.”
According to WSJ, Netflix is now looking to agree similar deals elsewhere, including across Europe and Latin America.
