Fox Corporation has now completed its acquisition of Roku. First announced in June of this year, it has taken just a matter of months for Fox to wrap this deal up and cement its position as an even bigger player in the streaming world.
What You Need to Know
- Fox has finalized its acquisition of Roku.
- The move brings the entire Roku ecosystem and platform under Fox’s ownership.
- Roku will continue normal operations as part of a new Fox Digital Platforms division.
The news Fox was purchasing Roku was major, and for a few reasons. In the increasingly important FAST market, for example, the acquisition was all the more important. Considering Fox already own Tubi, the acquisition of Roku and The Roku Channel meant two of the biggest free streaming services were coming under the same ownership.
That is exactly what has now happened. In a deal originally valued at $22 billion, Fox has now completed its purchase of Roku, bringing the entire Roku ecosystem and platform under its control, and establishing itself as a next-generation media and technology giant.
“The closing of this acquisition advances the long-term strategy of Fox. Beginning today, our top priority for the combined company is to continue to relentlessly serve audiences and partners, while reinforcing the openness and choice that is the essence of the Roku platform. Our shared entrepreneurial passion and clear conviction toward building the future together with our new Roku colleagues gives us great confidence in the opportunities ahead of us,” said Lachlan K. Murdoch, Executive Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Fox Corporation.
With Roku set to continue operating as normal, nothing major is expected to change in the near future from the Roku user perspective.
“We started Roku more than two decades ago to give people a better way to watch TV, and that mission doesn’t change today. What does change is our reach and resources. Fox has a deep respect for Roku’s culture and wholly shares our commitment to staying open to every content partner. Our teams will keep building and innovating as they always have, now with the support and capabilities of Fox behind us. I’m proud of what Roku’s employees have built, and I’m excited about what comes next,” explained Roku founder Anthony Wood.
Roku is now part of a newly formed Fox Digital Platforms division, which brings together Fox’s various digital products and services, including Tubi, Fox One, and Red Seat Ventures.
