Amazon’s Freevee app is scheduled to shut down next month. Unlike service closures which come with very little warning, Amazon previously made clear that Freevee’s time was coming to an end. What’s more, Freevee isn’t completely disappearing, as it will continue to live on inside the Prime Video app.
Freevee users that have accessed the app in the past few days will likely already be aware of this change, as Amazon recently began showing an in-app message informing them of the closure of the app.
For those that haven’t seen it, here’s the in-app message in full.
“Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies and live TV.
The Freevee app will be accessible until August 2025.
Continue watching your favorite Freevee Originals and our library of hit movies, shows, and live TV on Prime Video for free, no subscription needed. Download Prime Video to get started and sign-in with your Amazon account.”
As the message makes clear, Freevee content will continue to be available inside the Prime Video app, and at no additional cost. Existing Freevee users will just need to sign in with a free Amazon account to access the content.
With the rise in popularity of free content in recent years, it is not surprising that Amazon has chosen to make this change.
By integrating both services into the same app and experience, Amazon not only streamlines its services, but can also better use Freevee as a gateway to Prime Video in general.
Many premium services now offer a selection of free content and typically use this free programming as a way to attract new users to their platform, and as a way to encourage free users to sign up for the paid service.
Amazon is no different in this respect, and using one app and service to house all of its video content is the natural next step.
