It may have taken its time but an Android version of the Apple TV app is now available to download through the Google Play Store. As the Apple TV app was already available on Android TV/Google TV devices, the latest version unlocks support for Android mobile devices, including smartphone, tablets, and foldables.
The good news is that the Android TV app includes access to Apple TV+. Existing Apple TV+ subscribers with an Android mobile device can now access the full Apple TV+ catalog, including MLS Season Pass if subscribed, on their Android mobile devices.
Likewise, those that have yet to sign up to Apple TV+ can do so directly through the Android mobile app on a compatible device. Speaking of support, the Android mobile app does require devices to be running a minimum of Android 10.
In addition to Apple TV+ content, Android mobile users have access to various features, including the ability to ‘Continue Watching,’ the ability to add titles to a Watchlist, or download videos to watch offline.
That’s largely where support ends. For example, those that have purchased videos through iTunes won’t be able to access those videos on their Android mobile device. They also won’t be able to rent any videos through the app either.
Adding to this, the mobile version of the app doesn’t include Cast support, removing the option to cast content from an Android TV mobile device to a nearby TV or streaming player.
In spite of the limitations, support for Android mobile has been a long time coming and will be of benefit to those looking to access the Apple TV+ catalog of Originals. The support also arrives just in time for the start of the new MLS Season.
