Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed that Max will begin offering CNN programming as part of a new 24/7 live news streaming service. CNN Max is currently scheduled to launch late next month, and as part of an open beta in the United States.
In the first half of 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery launched a new CNN+ streaming service. However, this was one of the shortest-lived streaming services as it shut down one month later. Since then, and especially since the rebrand of HBO Max to Max, there have been suggestions that Warner Bros. Discovery was preparing to add more live news content to Max.
That’s exactly what is now happening. Starting September 27, Max users in the U.S. will be able to tune in and watch CNN Max. According to the announcement, “CNN Max will leverage CNN’s reporting excellence, global newsgathering, and live programming from CNN US, CNN International, and feature original programming built specifically for Max.”
Basically, CNN Max is a 24/7 live news streaming service that lives within the Max app and will host familiar CNN anchors presenting new programming that’s built specifically for Max, including CNN Newsroom with Jim Acosta, Rahel Solomon, Amara Walker and Fredricka Whitfield, and CNN Newsroom with Jim Sciutto.
This is in addition to more familiar programming, including Amanpour, Anderson Cooper 360, The Lead with Jake Tapper, and The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.
“CNN Max is differentiated by having 24/7 news at its core from CNN, the leading global news organization, and being available on a scaled streaming service in the U.S., which has a significantly younger and additive audience compared to traditional TV. This provides even more quality choices for Max customers who will be able to easily catch up on what is happening in the world, particularly in moments of breaking news, all within one seamless experience,” stated JB Perrette, CEO and President, Global Streaming and Games for Warner Bros. Discovery.
Those familiar with Max will be aware that the streaming service already has a CNN Originals hub. Once CNN Max goes live in September, the CNN Originals hub will be renamed CNN Max, and this will then act as a gateway to the CNN Max 24/7 live stream as well as CNN Originals and additional news content.
According to Warner Bros. Discovery, more than 900 episodes of current and legacy CNN programming will be available through the new CNN Max portal, including Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown (Seasons 1-12), Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy (Seasons 1-2), Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, and The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper.
