A new Fox Local app provides homes with a way to watch local news and weather for free. At present, the app is only available to those based in Atlanta, Detroit, and Washington DC, but the plan is for it to become available in more locations later this year.
Accessing local news, sports, and other local channels has become increasingly more difficult over the past year, and this has led to an increased focus on direct-to-consumer options. A good example of this was the recent Phoenix Suns and Mercury agreement that struck an over-the-air and streaming deal to overcome issues related to Bally Sports.
Now, Fox Television Stations has launched its latest solution in the form of the Fox Local app to provide connected TV owners with a direct route to stream local news in their city for free by offering access to Watch FOX Weather, FOX Soul, and LiveNow from FOX.
As an example of what those living in Detroit can expect with the Fox Local app, and as explained by FOX 2 Detroit, residents can stream FOX 2 shows for free, including FOX 2 News morning, The Nine, FOX 2 News at 11, The Noon, and FOX 2 News evening and late news.
As part of the launch, the new Fox Local app is only available to homes in Atlanta, Detroit, and Washington DC. For those based elsewhere, the good news is that these three cities are only the first. Fox has confirmed that the plan is to make the app available in more locations over the course of this year.
Eventually, the app will launch in Austin, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles and Southern California, Minneapolis-St.Paul, Milwaukee, New York City, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Francisco and the Bay area, Seattle, and Tampa Bay
While good news for homes looking for access to local news and weather, there’s no suggestion that local Fox affiliates will become available to access through the app anytime soon.
For those interested in checking the new app out, Fox Local is currently only available to download on Amazon FireTV, Apple TV, and Google TV/AndroidTV. Again, Fox does plan to add support for more devices and platforms in the future.
