FreeCast has announced plans to roll out FreeCast Cities, a free local streaming platform that will look to solve the fragmented pain point felt by many consumers in the age of streaming.
What You Need to Know
- FreeCast Cities aims to unify fragmented streaming by combining local TV, FAST channels, and premium services.
- The plan is to launch FreeCast Cities in each of the 210 U.S. Designated Market Areas.
- FreeCast hasn’t confirmed which cities will get the service first.
The general idea here is that FreeCast Cities will offer localized streaming experiences in each of the 210 U.S. Designated Market Areas (DMAs).
These experiences will be tailored to each DMA by combining local television, FAST channels, free ad-supported movies and television programming, and premium television services, into a single platform.
By combining them into a single platform, FreeCast hopes to fix a broken system where users have to constantly switch between apps and micro-manage their streaming experience.
“Television has become increasingly fragmented across dozens of applications, subscriptions, and devices,” said William (Bill) Mobley, Chief Executive Officer of FreeCast. “FreeCast Cities was developed to simplify that experience by bringing local television together with streaming services, premium entertainment, and subscription management into one unified platform.”
This is not the first time FreeCast has spoken about a project like this. Back at CES 2024, the company put forward its vision for a unified streaming ecosystem and it now looks like FreeCast Cities will be that vision’s final form.
According to the company, FreeCast Cities is already in beta testing and the plan is to launch the platform through a phased market rollout rather than deploying the service nationwide at the same time.
“We believe introducing markets individually will allow us to work closely with local broadcasters and partners while delivering a more localized experience for consumers,” added Mobley.
While FreeCast has confirmed individual city launches on a market-by-market basis, the company has yet to provide any details on the rollout schedule, or which DMAs will be first to receive the platform.
