If you tried to access YouTube yesterday on an Android TV or Google TV device, you may have noticed that the app would crash immediately after opening. This appears to have been a bug, and one that has now been fixed with a new update.
The YouTube for Android TV app received an update on Sept. 3 and it is this update that is believed to have broken the app. For those that have Auto-update apps switched on, their app would have automatically updated to the version that caused the issue.
Late yesterday, Google rolled out another update for the YouTube app. This Sept. 4 update is now available through the Google Play Store and appears to include the fix for the issue, making it possible to use the app again on an Android TV or Google TV app.
Again, those that have Auto-update apps switched on should automatically get the latest version soon enough. However, it is also possible to manually apply the update by following the instructions below (may vary depending on the device):
- Click on Settings icon on Home screen
- Click on All Settings
- Scroll down and click on Apps
- Scroll down and click on Manage Updates
- Click on See available updates
- Click on Updates
- Click on YouTube
- Click on Update
If YouTube doesn’t appear in the list of available updates then the app may have already been automatically updated to the latest version. To double check, you can click on Check for updates to search for the latest version of the app.
Once the update is downloaded and applied, the YouTube app should be working normally again.
