Max Subscribers Can Now Add An Extra Member To Their Account — For A Fee

Max subscribers in the U.S. can now add an extra member to their account, making it easier to access the streaming service in two locations. However, the privilege will cost an extra $8 a month.

Over the past couple of years, we have seen a number of streaming services look to clamp down on password-sharing and this has often resulted in the launch of an ‘extra member’ feature. For example, following the launch of Netflix’s Extra Member feature in 2023, Disney+ launched its own version in late 2024.

Now Max has joined the party by offering its subscribers the option to add another house to their account. And, at $8 a month, the price is pretty much identical to the extra member fees charged by Netflix and Disney+.

Also similar to those other services, extra members will have their own login credentials, creating what is essentially a new subscription that operates completely separate to the primary account holder’s subscription.

For those interested in adding another home, the new Extra Member Add-On can be purchased directly from the Max subscription settings.

After the add-on has been purchased, the primary account holder will then be able to invite their extra member.

If that extra member already has a profile on the main account, they can transfer that profile out to the extra member account, saving all of their recommendations and settings in the process.

With all Max subscribers able to add an extra member, it doesn’t matter whether the account holder is subscribed to the ad-supported tier or one of the ad-free plans.

That said, the experience received by the extra member can be impacted by the tier of the original account holder. Most notably, in terms of whether they receive an ad-supported or ad-free streaming experience.

Max’s Extra Member Limitations

As to be expected, Max has implemented a number of limitations with its new Extra Member feature. For example, and while all Max subscribers can now add an extra member, they currently can only add one per account. Regardless of the subscription tier, all Max subscribers can only add one Extra Member.

Another limitation is that extra members can only stream from one profile on one device at a time. This could be a pretty major limitation, depending on the number of people in the second ‘extra member’ home.

A final limitation is that the option to add extra members is not available to those that bundle Max with other subscriptions. Instead, the option to add an Extra member is only available to those directly subscribed to Max, and as a standalone subscription.
