Netflix is beginning to offer subscribers the option to switch on a new type of subtitles – one that is focused on dialogue.
While Netflix already offers subtitles, and in many languages, the new option makes it possible to have those subtitles focus on what people are saying, and not any of the other cues that are often included in subtitles and closed captions.
According to the company, nearly half of all viewing hours on Netflix in the US happen with subtitles or captions on. It is this high use of subtitles that appears to have fueled Netflix to offer the new dialogue-only version.
While now available, Netflix says the new subtitle option is going to roll out in stages. For example, it is currently only available in English, and currently only available when watching the Netflix Original You.
Netflix says the plan is to make this alternate subtitle option available on all new Netflix originals in every language the service offers.
For those interested in checking out the new subtitle option when watching season five of You (which dropped on Netflix this week), opening the language picker now shows two English subtitle options: English and English (CC).
The standard English option is the new one that focuses only on spoken dialogue while English (CC) continues to offer audio cues along with dialogue.
Regardless of the type of subtitles chosen, subscribers also have the option of further customizing the experience by changing the size and font.
