Paramount has officially completed its takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery, ending a merger period that has gone on for more than a year and saw Paramount win out over Netflix. The completed merger has also now resulted in the creation of the combined Skydance company.
What You Need to Know
- Paramount has officially finished its multi-billion dollar takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery.
- The finalized merger has resulted in the creation of a single company operating under the name Skydance and led by CEO David Ellison.
- The combined entity now controls an enormous catalog of entertainment assets, including movie studios, cable networks, news channels, and global streaming platforms.
While the merger has taken the best part of a year to complete, the suggestion the two companies could combine has gone on for years now.
Back in 2023, for example, Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global were reportedly discussing the idea of a merger before Warner Bros. Discovery seemingly hit pause on the possibility.
Then, following what seemed like a done deal for Netflix to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount Skydance reentered the race and eventually managed to agree a deal.
This week, that deal closed fully, with Paramount having now officially completed a takeover valued at more than $110 billion, bringing together two of the world’s most recognizable entertainment companies.
“Today is a historic day, not just for Skydance but for our entire industry. From the start, our ambition was to bring these two storied studios together and create a stronger competitor, with the talent, resources, and reach to tell great stories in every genre, on every platform, for audiences everywhere,” said David Ellison, Chairman and CEO of Skydance.
As part of the completed takeover process, Skydance Corporation this week confirmed the new single creative powerhouse will be called Skydance. According to the company, the goal with the new Skydance combined entity is to create “the next-generation global media and entertainment company.”
“Our focus now turns to the future: building a company that empowers creatives, entertains audiences and rewards shareholders. We couldn’t be more excited to get to work,” added Ellison.
Two Major Companies Become a Single Powerhouse
There can be no doubting that this merger has resulted in the creation of a powerhouse company, and one that is now positioned to become an even greater and more significant player in the industry.
The combined company not only brings together major film studios, but also global streaming services (with more than 200 million streaming subscribers across platforms), television assets like CBS and HBO, as well as Paramount’s and WBD’s cable networks, including CBS News and CNN.
From the IP perspective, the merger brings together major franchises including the DC Universe, The Wizarding World (Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts), The Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, Mission: Impossible, and Transformers, among others.
This is all also in addition to the Sheridan-verse, and the entire stable of HBO content, including Game of Thrones, Succession, The Last of Us, and The White Lotus, to name a few.
In terms of the standalone streaming services, the announcement confirmed the likes of HBO Max and Paramount+ will eventually combine into a single service.
