Key Takeaways

  • Paramount Skydance is preparing a bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery before its planned split into cable and streaming divisions.
  • The deal could result in the merging of HBO Max and Paramount+.
  • A bold move weeks after the Paramount-Skydance merger and one that could open the door to rapid industry consolidation.

Earlier this year, Warner Bros. Discovery announced plans to split into two companies. The split would result in the creation of a cable business and a separate streaming business.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Paramount Skydance is preparing to make a bid for Warner Bros. Discovery as it stands today. Essentially, the intent is to purchase the entire current company before the split into two takes place next year, taking control of all of the company’s assets, both cable and streaming, in the process.

As is typically the case with reports like this, WSJ notes that a bid might not be made and the plan to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery could fall apart altogether.

If such an acquisition was to happen, it would mark a major step in consolidation, bringing together the movies, series, and sports portfolios of two prominent companies.

Sports, in particular, could be greatly reshaped, with Paramount Skydance potentially increasing its control over NCAA Men’s Basketball, MLB, NHL, colleges sports, and more.

Not to mention, a deal would also bring control of both HBO Max and Paramount+ together under one parent company.

The prospect of a deal is also notable considering its proximity to the merger of Paramount Global and Skydance Media. As the merger only closed last month, it seems the new Paramount Skydance is keen to make its presence felt, and quickly.
