Philo subscribers now get access to the ad-supported versions of HBO Max and Discovery+ as part of their Core package. Although the new Warner Bros. Discovery partnership marks a major content boost for Philo, subscribers can expect their price to increase by $5 a month.
Key Takeaways
- Philo’s Core package now includes ad-supported HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming services, boosting content offerings but increasing the monthly price by $5.
- This expansion follows last year’s inclusion of AMC+ in the Core package and raises the total value of bundled streaming content by another $16 per month.
- Existing subscribers get one-month free access to HBO Max and Discovery+ before the price rises to $33/month, while new subscribers pay the higher rate when signing up.
As a live TV streaming service, Philo has always been a little on the light side in terms of content. This is intentional, of course, with Philo also positioning itself as more of an affordable live TV service.
However, that did begin to change last year when Philo announced it was rebranding its base package as Core and bundling AMC+. In what is now a massive expansion, HBO Max and Discovery+ are both now included in the Core package as well.
Similar to AMC+, access to the additional streaming services does come with an additional cost, as the price of the Core package is increasing to $33/mo (a $5 increase).
Also similar to AMC+, Philo is bundling access to the ad-supported versions of both HBO Max and Discovery+. Considering HBO Max costs a minimum of $9.99 a month while Discovery+ costs $5.99 a month, this equates to $15.98/mo in additional streaming value.
Existing Philo subscribers will have access to both streaming services at no additional cost for the first month and will then see their price increase by the additional $5, taking their minimum total up to $33 a month.
New subscribers can expect to pay $33 a month now when signing up and have access to HBO Max and Discovery+ as part of their live TV package.
“In today’s environment, it’s no longer enough to own just one component of the viewership equation,” said Mike Keyserling, Philo COO. “Modern platforms must provide a unified experience and serve every mode — live, VOD, FAST, SVOD — to retain relevance and revenue. The addition of the HBO Max library and its premium IP to our bundle, means we can give our customers more of what they’ve been looking for, at an exceptional value.”
Although access to both streaming libraries is going live today, it may take some time for the libraries to become available on the Philo website or in the Philo app.
