What You Need to Know

  • Plex users in the U.S. can now check movie showtimes and buy theater tickets directly through a new Fandango integration
  • The feature is now visible on title pages for movies currently playing in theaters.
  • The partnership also provides studios and advertisers with a direct and measurable way to track discovery through to ticket sale.

Plex has always been a popular option for movies. While the platform started as a place to house a user’s digital movie collection, it has expanded in the streaming age to offer direct access to even more movies, including rentals.

That now also extends to movies currently showing in the theaters. Beginning today, Plex users in the U.S. will see a clickthrough option to see showtimes and purchase movie theater tickets when checking out new movies.

“Our vision is to make Plex the place where people can discover what to watch, regardless of where that content lives. Fandango lets us extend that experience to all theatrical releases in the U.S., giving fans an easy way to act once they find a movie they want to see,” said Scott Olechowski, Chief Product Officer and Co-Founder at Plex.

The new Fandango integration can be seen on title pages for movies currently playing in theaters, with the new ticketing option allowing them to click directly through to Fandango to see showtimes and buy tickets.

“Plex has a unique view into what movie fans are actively considering, from what they’re searching for to what they’re watching across services,” said Jerramy Hainline, EVP, Fandango. “By connecting those discovery signals with Fandango ticketing, we’re making it easier for fans to turn that interest into a trip to the theater, while giving studios and advertisers a more direct, measurable path to ticket sales.”

From the studio, distributor, and advertiser perspective, the new integration also offers another way to drive ticket sales, and at the very point of discovery on the Plex platform.

“For studios and advertisers, we’re also creating a more measurable path from discovery to purchase, helping marketers understand which campaigns are converting, so they can use those insights to make their media work harder,” added Olechowski.

For conversion tracking, Plex and Fandango have partnered with attribution platform Kochava to provide greater visibility on campaigns, engagement, and ticket sales.
