Sling TV will begin streaming in 4K this week, but support will initially be limited to select users, devices, and programming. Unlike some other live TV services, Sling currently doesn’t plan to charge an additional fee for access to 4K content.
The first event to become available to watch in 4K will be the 2024 MLB All-Star Game, which takes place tomorrow (July 16). As the All-Star Game is available to watch on Fox, only Sling Blue subscribers will have access to the first 4K event on Sling TV. With Fox additionally only available in select locations through Sling TV, not all Sling Blue subscribers will be able to access the live feed.
Following the MLB All-Star game, other sports events due to be shown in 4K include the 2024 Paris Olympics on USA Network, and college and pro football games on FS1 and ESPN. With ESPN only available through Sling Orange, those signed up to the combined Orange & Blue package will have access to the most sports events in 4K.
Sling’s 4K support is also currently limited to select Amazon Fire TV and Roku devices. Currently supported Roku devices include Roku Express 4K+, Streaming Stick 4K+, Roku Stream Bar and Roku Ultra. Currently supported Fire TV devices include Fire TV Stick 4K, 4K Max, and the Fire TV Cube.
According to Sling, more 4K devices are due to gain support in the coming months.
A final limitation is that Sling subscribers are currently unable to record events in 4K. However, that’s expected to change following the All-Star Game.
