Vizio TV users now have the option of accessing local channels, including ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and PBS, directly within the Sling TV app. The move by Sling and Vizio is designed to simplify the viewing experience.
Vizio has a little bit of a storied history with OTA channels. Back in 2023, Vizio rolled out a significant platform update that affected the way local channels are accessed.
While the update was designed to make it easier to access local channels by integrating them within Vizio’s free WatchFree+ streaming service, the update also removed the ability for Vizio users to access the channels without using WatchFree+.
The new Sling TV integration works in a very similar way to the WatchFree+ integration, as it also removes the need to switch inputs.
For those that already use the Sling TV app on their Vizio TV, the new feature might be a better option than WatchFree+, as it will ensure ensure local channels are listed in the live guide along with the channels included in their Sling TV package.
“At Sling TV, we’re always looking for ways to simplify the viewing experience while delivering the best value in television,” said Seth Van Sickel, senior vice president, product and operations, EchoStar video services. “This integration with Vizio allows our customers to effortlessly access their favorite local programming right alongside their Sling content, reinforcing our commitment to affordability, flexibility and ease of use.”
Similar to the way the WatchFree+ integration works, an OTA antenna will need to be connected to the TV to integrate the channels. Providing an antenna is connected, Vizio TV owners can activate the OTA integration by scanning for any available channels.
To perform the scan, open the Sling TV App, navigate to Settings > Local Channels > Configure Locals, and then select Scan for Channels.
Once the scan has completed, any available local channels will automatically be displayed in the Sling TV guide, alongside any other Sling channels the Vizio TV owner has access to.
