A standard Apple TV+ subscription costs $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year following a 7-day free trial. However, some individuals and households may find they can access the streaming service for free for a limited amount of time. Alternatively, that they can reduce the cost by combining Apple TV+ with some of Apple’s other subscription services.

Apple launched its Apple TV+ subscription service in November of 2019. Although the variety of content was limited at the time, Apple has been expanding the lineup since then. Popular shows available to watch on Apple TV+ include Home Before Dark, Servant, Ted Lasso, and The Morning Show. Apple TV+ is available to stream on a MacBook, an iPhone, Apple TV players, as well as a number of non-Apple devices as well.

Any individuals or households looking to sign up to Apple TV+ will find a standard subscription currently costs $4.99 per month. However, Apple does also offer a seven-day free trial allowing interested consumers to try the service before having to pay. Once the free trial has started, subscribers also have the option to change billing from monthly to annually. At $49.99 per year, subscribers can save $9.89 compared to paying monthly for 12 months.

As is often the case with subscription services, the free trial will automatically convert to a paid subscription, so users will need to cancel before the trial ends if they want to avoid being billed the $4.99 monthly rate.

Free Apple TV+ for device owners

When Apple originally launched Apple TV+, it was offering those who purchased an Apple product, such as an iPad or Apple TV player, the ability to watch Apple TV+ for free, for up to one year. As that promotion has now ended, anyone purchasing an Apple device will benefit from up to three months of free Apple TV+. Technically, the one-year promotion ended on July 1, 2021, and any devices that were activated on June 30, 2021 or before will still be eligible for one full year of free Apple TV+.

However, there are some caveats to be aware of. Firstly, the promotion is only good for the first three months (or one year) after a device has been activated. In addition, the promotion can only be redeemed once per device and family group. In other words, purchasing additional Apple devices and linking them to the same account won’t result in multiple free periods. Likewise, if someone from the same family group has already redeemed the offer, it cannot be redeemed again by another family group member.

Lastly, and similar to the free trial in general, the subscription will automatically become a paid subscription once the extended free period ends. Therefore, subscribers will need to make sure they cancel Apple TV+ before the end of the three months to avoid paying $4.99 per month.

Combining Apple TV+

For any individuals or households that pay for more than one Apple subscription, it might be worth combining them with Apple TV+ to reduce the overall cost. In late 2020, Apple launched Apple One offering the option to bundle subscriptions together. There are three main Apple One plans available and all of them include Apple TV+. Therefore, the only decisions to be made are how many additional services are needed and whether they are being shared with anyone else.

First up is the individual plan. Priced at $14.99 per month, this one combines TV+ with Apple Music, Arcade and iCloud (with 200GB). This results in an overall monthly saving of $6 compared to purchasing the various subscriptions separately. Then there’s the Family plan. Priced at $19.99 per month, the Family plan is not any different to the Individual plan other than it can be shared with up to five other people. The more people shared with, the greater the savings that will be available to each individual, so long as the cost is also being shared.

Lastly, there’s the Premier plan. As the name suggests, this is Apple’s best and most expensive plan. Priced at $29.99 per month, the Premier plan not only provides Apple TV+, Music, Arcade and iCloud (2 TB) but also adds News+ and Fitness+ subscriptions as well. Like the Family plan, the Premier plan can also be shared with up to five other people.

Apple TV+ cost summary

Apple TV+ costs $4.99 per month for a standard subscription, but there is also an option to pay $49.99 per year instead, saving almost $10 each year in the process. In addition, there is also a 7-day free trial allowing consumers to test the service out before committing to payments. Alternatively, an Apple TV+ subscription can also be bundled with other Apple One subscriptions, reducing the overall cost.

For those that have recently purchased an Apple device, they may be eligible for an extended three-month free trial. Regardless of whether using the 7-day or 3-month free trial, consumers will want to make sure they cancel Apple TV+ before the free period ends to avoid automatically being billed, if they don’t plan to remain a subscriber.
