BLKFAM is launching today as a new free, ad-supported streaming service. According to the announcement, BLKFAM is “the first and only Black-owned, Black-focused family streaming platform.”

The new streaming platform and service has gained support from Whoopi Goldberg, who has signed on as an equity partner. Goldberg is also helping to guide the creative development of some of the service’s exclusive programming. 10 new original live action and animated series are already said to be in development and set to arrive on the platform throughout the year.

In the meantime, BLKFAM is launching with an “extensive content library” that includes 1000+ hours of programming, including more than 20 syndicated series and hundreds of hours of original music driven content.

Black culture and content is so often stereotyped, siloed or written off – so I wanted to create a platform where my kids and I can be entertained without having to face those same daily biases,” says Larry Adams, Founder and CEO of BLKFAM. “By curating authentic content – proven through data and AI – primarily from Black storytellers, we’ve built a service reflecting true inclusion and diversity, where Black parents and children especially can feel holistically represented.”

For those interested in giving the new free, ad-supported streaming platform and service a try, BLKFAM is launching with a fairly wide level of service and device support, including Amazon Fire TV, Amazon Prime Video Channels, Android, Apple TV, iOS, LG TVs, Roku, Samsung Smart TVs, Vizio TVs and YouTube TV.

So far we have been unable to find the app on any of these platforms and the website also doesn’t appear to be working at the moment, so it may take some time for these to go live.

While reviewing airlines isn't quite the same as reviewing devices and streaming services, John brings the same analytical eye to all of his reviews and industry analysis, along with a special emphasis on what's best for the consumer.
