DirecTV Started Rolling Out Picture-in-Picture On Android Last Week, But Then Stopped The Rollout

DirecTV recently started rolling out Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode on Android. While great news for DirecTV customers using an Android device, the rollout has since been paused, and it currently remains unclear when it will resume again.

Picture-in-Picture is a great feature for mobile users to have, as it allows them to continue watching a video feed while doing something else on the mobile phone, including accessing other apps.

And considering DirecTV‘s PiP has been available on iOS devices for a number of years now, it has become a highly sought-after and requested feature by Android users.

Those requests appeared to have been answered last week when DirecTV confirmed it was now in the process of rolling out a new Android app update that included PiP.

Picture-in-Picture support was rolling out as part of the same update that included the new Sports Central hub, and was expected to reach all users by the end of the same day.

Almost a week later, however, and many users still have not received PiP support, even after updating the app to the latest version. And we now know why – the update was quietly paused.

According to DirecTV representatives, the Android update was paused at 20% of users. No information on why the update was paused has been provided so far, and it remains unclear exactly when the update will resume.

While there are no firm details on when the rollout will resume, it is worth noting that the update was originally scheduled to roll out on March 23 before then being pushed forward. Whether that means the rollout might resume next week remains unclear, but it is a possibility.

In the meantime, with some DirecTV mobile users now having access to Picture-in-Picture mode on their Android devices, and others having to continue to wait, the DirecTV Android userbase suddenly finds themselves encountering a split experience.
