DirecTV has now officially launched its new and free live TV streaming service, MyFree DirecTV. As explained last month, the new streaming service provides access to a variety of free, ad-supported (FAST) channels without the need to pay a monthly subscription fee.
The channel lineup spans a variety of genres, including sports, food and travel, news, entertainment and comedy. Some of the notable channels available at launch include Court TV, Dog Whisperer, El Rey Rebel, Fox Weather, MovieSphere, and Women’s Sports Network.
Those interested in checking out the service will need to sign up for a free account via the MyFree DirecTV website. After signing up, the service can be accessed by downloading the DirecTV app on a compatible smart TV, phone or tablet.
It is currently only possible to sign up through the website or on Roku devices. DirecTV says the option to sign up and watch across Amazon Fire TV, Android and Apple devices, as well as via the DirecTV app, will begin to become available later this week.
As is the case with other FAST services, DirecTV plans to continually update the list of free channels, so users can expect more FAST channels to be added in the future. For example, DirecTV has already confirmed that a number of Freemantle channels are due to be added to the lineup before the end of this year.
“DirecTV is excited to bring a successful history of premium content aggregation and an elevated user experience to free TV for the first time,” said Kent Rees, General Manager, MyFree DirecTV. “The availability of MyFree DirecTV is the building block of the future for us as we tap into an entirely new audience through this new freemium experience going beyond the traditional pay TV customer.”
For reference, there is no need for those already signed up to a paid DirecTV or DirecTV Stream live TV package to also sign up for the new free service, as all of the free channels are already included with DirecTV’s paid plans.
