Ever since the launch of Max, there had been some concerns over what would happen to Discovery+, and especially considering Max is now home to plenty of Discovery-related content as well.
While Warner Bros. Discovery previously confirmed that Discovery+ will continue to live on as a standalone service, the company has now doubled-down on that promise by confirming Discovery+ is finally about to catch up with Max on a technical level.
Discovery+ in the U.S. and Canada is set to be migrated to a modern in-house tech stack, according to Warner Bros. Discovery. The company explained that the change will bring “discovery+ to the same technical platform and infrastructure that powers Max.”
From the user perspective, the change will enable many of the same features in Discovery+ as in Max. This is also while continuing to allow each service to utilize its own unique design and layout.
Some of the changes Discovery+ subscribers can expect include:
- Refined Homepage and Navigation
- Enhanced Personalization Recommendations
- In-Player Discovery Improvements: In player discovery allows viewers to effortlessly switch between episodes and personalized content recommendations within the video player, streamlining the viewing experience and making it easier to enjoy the content they love.
- User sign-in via QR code
- Mobile Social Sharing: The content detail on the mobile app now includes a “Share” button for adult profile users to easily share show recommendations via text or social media.
Although good for Discovery+ subscribers, the move is also good for the company as well, as it helps to ensure Warner Bros. Discovery offers more of a consistent user experience across its different streaming apps.
“This is a huge win, not only for our internal teams but also for our subscribers,” said Avi Saxena, CTO, Warner Bros. Discovery. “We’ve been driving rapid innovation across our platforms, and now, all of our streaming products will benefit from a richer feature set. A singular unified platform has been central to our technology strategy, and this marks a major milestone in that journey.”
