Locast is now available in Detroit, offering residents access to local live TV channels streamed over the internet for free. While Locast continues to defend its stance as a non-profit and the right to make available access to free live TV, it has continued to expand to more areas of the United States.
Last month was the last time Locast announced an expansion which saw the live TV streaming service reach residents in the Minneapolis and St. Paul market in Minnesota. At the time, that took the number of Locast-supported cities up to 22. With Detroit having now been lit up with free local live TV, the number of cities Locast now operates in has climbed to 23.
In a press release, Locast confirmed it has now expanded to include the Detroit and Ann Arbor TV market in Michigan with 66 local TV channels now available to stream for free over the internet, including ABC 7, NBC 4, CBS 62, FOX 2, PBS, among others. Locast specifically confirms the service is now catering to residents in the following Michigan counties: Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Sanilac, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne.
In total, Locast now says it is available to 145 million users in the U.S., with 1.5 million of them already using the service.
Accessing Locast for new Detroit customers
Locast provides access to local live TV channels over the internet for free. While the service does not technically charge for access, it does encourage users to donate on a monthly basis to help support its operations and continue to expand to new cities. However, the donation system is in optional.
To get started, residents in Detroit simply need to download the Locast app on their smartphone, set-top box, or smart TV, set up a free account, and then start streaming local live TV channels available in their area. Residents can also stream through the main Locast website, as well as check which channels are available to them in general.
