Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed it is abandoning its plan to charge Max subscribers an additional monthly fee for its sports add-on. Instead, sports and news continue will remain available to ad-free subscribers at no additional cost.
The B/R Sports add-on was first added to the Max streaming service back in October 2023. At that time, Warner Bros. Discovery made clear the add-on was only available at no cost for a limited time. Instead, the plan was to eventually charge an additional $9.99 a month on top of the price of a base Max subscription.
Initially, the sports add-on was only set to remain free until February. In January 2024, however, the company confirmed that it was delaying the rolling out of the additional fee for another few months.
With another year having now passed, Warner Bros. Discovery has finally confirmed that it won’t charge ad-free (Standard and Premium) subscribers at all for the add-on. Assuming these plans don’t change again in the future, the B/R Sports add-on is technically no longer even an add-on.
“Over the last year plus, we had the opportunity to assess how users engage with sports and news on Max, and we’ve been actively involved in exploring ways to evolve the sports distribution ecosystem in the U.S. We believe that the best place for that content for now is within the Standard and Premium tiers,” said JB Perrette, CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games, WBD. “This update ensures that subscribers can continue to enjoy that coveted access within Max, while also enabling ongoing investment in our premium sports and news portfolio.”
While good news for ad-free subscribers, Warner Bros. Discovery also confirmed that sports (B/R Sports) and news (CNN Max) content will no longer be available to ad-supported subscribers beginning March 30, 2025.
