The MSNBC network is set to be rebranded as My Source News Opinion World, or more simply MS Now. The change in name will take place later this year.
The change is a result of the Comcast spinoff announced late last year. As part of that spinning off process, a variety of Comcast’s cable networks will soon fall under the new Versant company. While this includes the spinning off of MSNBC, it doesn’t include the spinning off of NBC News.
Considering MSNBC and NBC News will no longer operate under the same company, the logic here is that maintaining the MSNBC name could prove confusing for viewers, hence the rebranding of the network.
With the original MSNBC name representing the original joint venture between Microsoft and NBC, removing both its prior connection to Microsoft and current connection to NBC is expected to help form more of a unique identity for the network in the future.
As part of the same change, MSNBC will also be dropping the iconic peacock logo. With the logo so obviously associated with NBCUniversal, the disconnecting of the MSNBC brand from the wider NBCU family also means a new logo is on the way.
Again, these changes are expected to come into effect later this year, closer to when the spin-off nears completion.
While the name and logo are changing, MSNBC says its core mission won’t change. “You know who we are, and what we do,” MSNBC said in a message to its community.
‘We will continue to cover the day’s news, ask the questions that matter most, and share how it impacts you, without fear or favor,’ the message added.
