Apple announced its App Store Award winners for the best apps and games of 2023, and Mubi took home the award for Apple TV App of the Year. While there are plenty of apps to download on an Apple TV player, Mubi looks to differentiate itself as a service designed with film lovers in mind.

Self-explained as “a place to discover ambitious films by visionary filmmakers,” Mubi is home to a collection of movies that have been carefully chosen by its curators. While this does mean that the library is smaller than some other streaming services, the collection is likely to appeal much more to fans of great cinema.

In briefly explaining why Mubi was chosen as its 2023 winner of the Apple TV App of the Year award, Apple said the service “curates exceptional indie films and international documentaries with a human touch.” In winning the award, Mubi beat out Bugsnax and FitOn.

Apple announced the winner of nine App Store awards for best apps and games in total. Here’s the full list of awards and winners.

For those now interested in giving Mubi a try, a standard subscription costs $12.99 a month (or $107.88 a year). However, there is also the option to sign up and pay $17.99 a month (or $143.88 a year) for Mubi Go. Regardless of which plan a subscriber signs up to, a 7-day free trial is available to all new users.

In terms of the differences, the main one is that the Mubi Go plan also includes a hand-picked cinema ticket each week. The weekly cinema ticket is not available in all cities, so it is worth checking to make sure it is available where you are before opting for the more expensive plan.
