It is widely understood that Netflix has been looking for new ways to improve engagement and keep members using its app, and a new report now claims one of the options under recent consideration was letting subscribers stream other services, including Peacock and Fox One, directly in its app.

What You Need to Know

  • Netflix has considered letting subscribers stream other services inside its own app.
  • A new report reveals Netflix has discussed this in-app streaming option to improve member engagement and retention.
  • The potential new feature would expand on previous discussions about adding live channels and launching a subscription store.

Last month, a report emerged highlighting that Netflix has been considering improving engagement and retention by adding live channels.

Another option, according to the report, was launching a subscription store. Similar to Prime Video, the proposed store would allow Netflix subscribers to purchase subscriptions directly in the Netflix app.

Seemingly as an extension of these options, a new report from The New York Times explains Netflix has recently discussed making other streaming services directly available in the Netflix app.

According to “three people familiar with the discussions,” Peacock and Fox One were both specifically named as some of the options under consideration.

While discussed, there are no indications so far that Netflix plans to follow through with these plans.

The Ultimate Way to Bundle Services

Assuming Netflix was to follow through with the idea of not only launching a subscriptions store, but also the ability to stream some or all of those subscriptions directly in the Netflix app, this would mirror the sort of experience that’s already offered by Prime Video.

In fact, Prime Video’s approach seems to be one that many services are now looking at how to best replicate, with this seen as the ultimate way to bundle services.

By allowing subscribers to stream other services within their app, a company ensures subscribers remain in the app and streaming.

This approach can not only prove beneficial in terms of data collection and ad use, but it makes it even easier for viewers to switch back to a company’s own ‘original‘ content.

From a service’s point of view, it is easy to see how this type of setup would be the best way to bundle its services with others.

Speaking of which, Netflix has already started making inroads in terms of opening up the possibility to bundle its services with other subscriptions.

Through Xfinity StreamSaver, Netflix can be bundled with both Apple TV and Peacock, lowering the price of each individual subscription.
