Starz ended the first calendar quarter of 2024 with 19.35 million domestic subscribers. This marks a subscriber decline when compared to both the quarter and year before.
Considering Lionsgate closed out 2023 with 19.7 million Starz subscribers, the streaming service lost close to 400,000 during the first three months of 2024. Even more notably, the first quarter of the year was the first time Starz lost streaming subscribers since the second calendar quarter of last year.
Starz ended March 2024 with approximately 6.76 million linear subscribers and 12.59 million streaming subscribers. Both were down when compared to the 7.1 million linear and 12.63 million streaming subscribers reported for the end of 2024.
On a year-over-year basis, the picture is a little more complicated. While Starz lost subscribers overall (19.35 million vs 20.27 million), this was entirely the result of a drop in linear subscribers (6.76 million vs 8.02 million). In contrast, the number of streaming subscribers (12.59 million) was up on the 12.25 million reported for the end of March 2023.
Lionsgate+ also reported a small decline in Lionsgate+ subscribers (4.97 million vs 5 million) during the most recent quarter. Although this decline was driven by a drop in linear subscribers (down from 1.75 million to 1.66 million), streaming subscribers increased to 3.31 million (up from 3.25 million).
When taking into account all of Lionsgate’s services (Starz, Lionsgate+ and StarzPlay Arabia), the company ended the first three months of 2024 with a total of 27.54 million domestic and international subscribers. This was down on the 27.92 million reported at the end of 2023, and down on the 28.1 million reported for the end of March of last year.
