YouTube and Paramount are currently locked in a dispute which could result in more than 20 national channels, various local stations, and add-ons being removed from the YouTube TV channel lineup. If the channels are removed, YouTube currently has no plans to lower the monthly cost of a YouTube TV subscription.
YouTube TV increased the price of its base package to $82.99 a month in December 2024. While the price increase didn’t take effect until last month for existing subscribers, new subscribers immediately started paying the higher rate in December.
In spite of only just increasing in price by $10 a month, YouTube TV is already facing its first major carriage dispute with more than 20 national channels, including BET, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV and Paramount, all on the line.
Naturally, with so many channels facing removal, existing subscribers have been raising questions on whether their removal will result in a lower monthly price. According to the TeamYouTube handle on X, that’s not the case. TeamYouTube says there are no plans to lower the cost of a subscription.
It is worth noting that this only applies to the standard cost of a subscription. YouTube had already confirmed that existing subscribers will receive an $8 credit if Paramount’s “content is unavailable for an extended period of time.” Whether this is a one-off credit or a monthly credit remains unclear.
With the outcome of the dispute also unclear at the moment, it might not be the best time to sign up to YouTube TV. However, those that are considering signing up right now are eligible for a $78 credit over six months through a separate promotion the live TV service is currently running.
While the $13 monthly discounted isn’t reflective of the dispute, new subscribers will still save on the cost for their first six months.
