One of the emerging trends of this year is price increases. Although price increases are nothing new for streaming services, it is streaming hardware products that have seen their prices going in the wrong direction this year, and even Nvidia’s Shield TV Pro couldn’t avoid rising in price.

What You Need to Know

  • The Nvidia Shield TV Pro price increased by $100, jumping to $299.
  • Nvidia has completely discontinued the standard Shield TV model.
  • The increase is the result of rising component costs.

Following the launch of the original Nvidia Shield TV Pro in 2015, the current version of the Shield TV Pro arrived in October, 2019. In spite of hitting its seventh birthday this month, the Android TV streaming player has now increased in price.

Previously priced at $199 in the U.S., the Nvidia Shield Pro now costs $299, resulting in a straight $100 price increase.

From what we can tell, the price appears to have quietly increased sometime last month. However, it is this week that the company publicly confirmed the increase via a statement to media outlets like Wccftech.

According to the relayed confirmation, the price increase is the result of rising components costs. The statement also confirmed the non-Pro Shield TV model has been discontinued entirely.

Hardware Costs Increasing Across the Industry

At $299, the Shield TV Pro is now considerably more expensive than ever before, and expensive in general. However, it is far from being the only hardware product to have increased in price this year.

In recent months, Apple increased the price of its Apple TV player, Amazon increased the price of its Fire TV devices, Roku increased the cost of its Roku players, and Google increased the price of its Google TV Streamer.

Similar to Nvidia, all of these other hardware price increases were attributed to the rising costs of components, including memory.

Similar to the Shield TV Pro, many of the most expensive streaming devices have increased in price by between $50 and $100, resulting in the cost of premium streaming players increasing significantly across the board.
