If you were unable to access a streaming service today, including Apple TV and Prime Video, it was likely the result of an internet outage. Earlier today, Amazon Web Services was hit by an outage, affecting many websites and apps, including streaming services.

  • A DNS-related outage at Amazon Web Services caused widespread disruptions to streaming platforms like Apple TV and Prime Video.
  • Some users were unable to perform actions while others were completely locked out of apps and accounts.
  • AWS identified and addressed the problem with functionality restored to most, if not all, affected services.

Depending on the app or service, some users may have only noticed an issue after opening the app and attempting to do perform some action.

In others, users were unable to launch an app at all, or found they had been signed out of their account with no ability to sign back in again

According to AWS, the issue first started surfacing a little after midnight PDT. By 2 AM PDT, Amazon Web Services has seemingly identified the issue as the result of a DNS-related problem.

The company has continued to work on fixing the problem since then and it is now largely understood to be under control and resolved. As a result, most, if not all, affected services should be back online and fully functional.

For those that are still encountering an issue, and assuming the issue is the result of the AWS outage, full functionality should be restored soon enough.

For reference, this issue didn’t only affect streaming services. If you have encountered issues with any websites or apps over the past few hours, it is highly likely that the problem was the result of the same Amazon Web Services disruption.
