Roku announced Howdy today, its new streaming service. Priced at just $2.99 a month, Howdy looks to offer access to thousands of titles from a variety of studios.
Along with nearly 10,000 hours of entertainment from launch partners, including Lionsgate, Warner Bros. Discovery, and FilmRise, Howdy will also be home to select Roku Original titles.
While Roku already offers plenty of content for free through The Roku Channel, a major difference here is that Howdy is being sold as an ad-free streaming service.
And considering the cost is only $3 a month, this is a very cheap subscription compared to other ad-free plans and tiers.
“Priced at less than a cup of coffee, Howdy is ad-free and designed to complement, not compete with, premium services,” said Roku founder and CEO Anthony Wood. “We’re meeting a real need for consumers who want to unwind with their favorite movies and shows uninterrupted, and on their terms. Howdy is a natural step for us at Roku, extending our mission to make better TV for everyone, by making it affordable, accessible, and built for how people watch today.”
Some of the popular titles confirmed to be available to stream on Howdy include Mad Max: Fury Road, The Blind Side, Weeds, and Kids in the Hall. Subscribers can also expect access to a variety of rom-coms, medical dramas, ‘90s comedy, feel-good classics, and more.
For those interested in giving the new streaming service a try, Howdy launches nationwide later today in the U.S.
