Consumers can currently save 50-percent on the cost of a basic Hulu subscription when purchasing an Amazon Fire TV device during December. As to be expected with a deal like this, there are no major limitations on streaming Hulu on a Fire TV player, and now consumers can save on the subscription while upgrading to a new streaming device.
Hulu offers both live TV access and a subscription service for access to on demand show episodes and movies. Technically, the live TV service includes access to the basic Hulu subscription service, but consumers can opt for the latter without having to pay the higher cost of live TV streaming. A standard Hulu subscription costs either $5.99 or $11.99 per month, depending on how the consumer feels about ads.
Now, Amazon is running a promotion where anyone who purchases and activates a new Fire TV device can save on the first six months of a Hulu ad-supported subscription. The deal results in a 50-percent discount on the subscription cost, bringing the total down to around $3 per month.
The deal seems to be available on a variety of Amazon’s TV hardware products, with the Fire TV Stick Lite the cheapest option overall. This device normally retails for $29.99, but at the same time, it is also on sale for $17.99 (Amazon link). That alone is about the same cost as the six-month savings. In this sense, the other way of looking at the deal is signing up to Hulu for six months gets you a free Fire TV Stick Lite.
Devices included in the promotion are as follows:
- Fire TV Stick Lite
- Fire TV Stick
- Fire TV Stick 4K
- Fire TV Cube (2nd Gen)
Alternatively, consumers can also take advantage of the discounted Hulu deal when buying more than one product as a bundle.
- Fire TV Stick Lite and Echo Dot (4th Gen) Bundle
- Fire TV Stick and Echo Dot (4th Gen) Bundle
- Fire TV Stick 4K and Echo Dot (4th Gen) Bundle
- Fire TV Stick Lite Essentials Bundle
- Fire TV Stick Essentials Bundle
- Fire TV Stick 4K Essentials Bundle
A decent deal for those that missed the last
In reality, the best deal for basic Hulu with ads has already come and gone. During the Black Friday and Cyber Monday celebrations, Hulu was running a promotion that allowed new and returning subscribers to sign up for just $1.99 per month. That was arguably the best and cheapest way to start a new subscription, but at just $1 extra per month, this is not a bad alternative, and especially if the consumer is also in the market for a new device anyway.
In terms of the restrictions, besides having to buy a device, the purchase must take place before 11:59pm PT on December 31, 2020. After the device has shipped, a promotional code will be emailed to the buyer and this can be redeemed via a dedicated ‘Amazon Holiday’ page on the Hulu website, reducing the monthly cost for the ad-supported Hulu plan down to $2.99.
