In spite of being older TV models, LG is making the expanded support possible via a firmware update. The update is being deployed in hotels nationwide, unlocking support for the company’s 2020-23 hotel TV models.
According to LG, the update specifically brings Google Cast support to LG webOS 5 Pro:Centric hotel TV series US670H, US770H, UR770H and the STB-6500 smartbox.
Thanks to the upgrade, hoteliers using these models will now be able to deliver guest casting capabilities without the need to add external devices or replace existing TVs.
The firmware upgrade is also designed to be quick and seamless, resulting in no extended downtime or disruption to guest services.
“The availability of this new firmware upgrade underscores LG’s ongoing commitment to protect the investment our customers make in LG display technology and solutions,” said Jake Benner, Senior Director of Hospitality at LG Electronics USA.
As is the case with existing Google Cast-supported LG TVs, hotel guests can cast to one of the newly upgraded TVs by scanning a QR code and selecting their room number.
Once connected, guests will then be able to cast content from their phone or tablet and use their mobile device as a personalized remote.
“We believe our ability to extend Google Cast functionality to previous-generation hotel TVs is unique and likely to be unmatched by other manufacturers,” added Benner.
