When it comes to Apple’s iPhone and iPad, it looks like Max proved to be a popular app to download in 2023. The Warner Bros. Discovery app ranked third for the year in terms of most downloaded free apps on iPhone, and first for most downloaded free apps on iPad.

The confirmation of Max’s most downloaded stance comes courtesy of Apple’s Top Apps and Games of 2023 on the App Store list. Along with Max, YouTube was the only other video streaming app to make the top 10 free iPhone apps in 2023.

Top Free iPhone Apps

  1. Temu: Shop Like a Billionaire
  2. CapCut – Video Editor
  3. Max: Stream HBO, TV, & Movies
  4. Threads, an Instagram app
  5. TikTok
  6. Instagram
  7. Google
  8. YouTube: Watch, Listen, Stream
  9. WhatsApp Messenger
  10. Gmail – Email by Google

As to be expected with a tablet, video streaming apps on iPad performed a little better overall. In addition to Max ranking as the most downloaded free app, YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and Peacock all made the top 10 free iPad apps list.

Top Free iPad Apps

  5. Disney+
  6. Goodnotes 6
  7. TikTok
  8. Amazon Prime Video

It is worth pointing out that these rankings are specific to the United States. For those interested in seeing which, if any, video streaming apps performed well in a different region, year-end charts localized for users in more than 35 countries and regions are now available on the App Store’s Today tab.

While this would seem to be a good metric for Max, the streaming service has undergone some major changes in 2023, some of which may have helped to boost downloads. Most notably, the rebrand from HBO Max to Max, which took place in the first half of this year, and resulted in the HBO Max app on iPhone and iPad being replaced with the new Max app.

As the rebrand also resulted in the streaming service suddenly gaining access to a wealth of Discovery+ content, the new app likely appealed to more people looking to save on the cost of multiple subscriptions.

In related Apple news, the company announced its 2023 App Store Awards winners at the end of November, with Mubi confirmed as the winner of the Apple TV App Of The Year award.
