Philo is rolling out a new Home screen design, with the main difference being a greater focus on featured programming. While the old design displayed large ‘featured’ cards at the top of the Home screen (above rows with smaller cards), the new design adopts much more of a full-screen mode.
Users can manually rotate between the five highlighted titles (similar to before) with each one adopting the same full-screen view. This also means subscribers no longer need to click on a featured title to see more options, such as Resume or More Info. Instead, these options are now part of the more prominent design, making it easier to quickly continue watching or find more information about a title.
Other than the greater focus on individual titles, there doesn’t appear to be any other major changes that we have noticed just yet. For example, subscribers can still press up to access the main menu and click through to Guide, Saved and so on. None of these other sections appear to have been changed in any meaningful way.
At present, this update appears to be rolling out to living room devices, which includes smart TVs and streaming players. While we are unsure of whether it is rolling out on all living room platforms, we are seeing the new design in use on devices powered by Android TV and Google TV.
The Google Play Store does suggest the new Home screen design is also rolling out to mobile devices, but we have yet to notice that change taking place. However, it is possible that the mobile app may have received a search-related update at the same time, as the Search section appears to be a little cleaner than before.
Streaming Better has reached out to Philo to confirm the scope of the update and will update this article if and when we receive a reply.
