Many legacy Philo subscribers are set to see their price increase in the coming months. This will mark the first time in the history of the live TV streaming service that these customers have encountered a price increase.
While price increase are nothing new in streaming, Philo has always been proud of the fact that it has never forced existing subscribers to pay more than the price they originally agreed to when signing up.
Although the price of Philo’s plans have increased throughout the years, rising from $16 to $28 a month, those subscribed at $16 (or $20) have been allowed to remain on the same plan at the same price.
However, that will change in the coming months.
In a letter to subscribers, Philo explained that it is unable to maintain its stance of never raising prices. Citing the need to build a sustainable business, Philo CEO Andrew McCollum explained that the company loses money on its oldest plans, and has done what it can to absorb those costs over the years.
In an attempt to maintain that sustainability, the company now plans to increase the price of its oldest legacy plans, bringing the cost more in line with what newer subscribers currently pay.
“The truth is that we lose money on our oldest plans, and have for some time. We’ve done what we can to absorb those costs out of loyalty to our subscribers, but in order to maintain a sustainable business, we’re making changes to some of our legacy subscription plans.”
Philo
From what Streaming Better understands, the price increase only affects Philo subscribers currently paying less than $25 a month for their subscription. Those subscribers will see their price increase to $25 a month.
Even at this higher price, these legacy subscribers will still be paying less than the current price new subscribers pay in 2025.
Philo added $3 to the monthly cost last year, and looked to offset some of this additional cost by bundling AMC+ with its live TV package.
At the time, Philo confirmed that existing subscribers (those paying $25/mo) could remain on the same plan at the same price, forfeiting access to AMC+ in the process.
It seems legacy subscribers will see their plan automatically upgraded to those same terms. In other words, they will soon pay $25 a month, $3 less than the current price, but won’t have access to AMC+.
That’s unless they chose to switch over to the new Core plan at the higher monthly rate.
Many of the oldest legacy subscribers will still only be receiving a 30-day DVR. As part of this automatic migration, those legacy subscribers will see their account upgraded to a one-year DVR.
In terms of when the price increase will take place, this will vary between subscribers, depending on the individual billing cycle. Streaming Better understands some affected subscribers can expect the price increase to land in early October, if not sooner.
