Roku has agreed its first-ever live sports deal, unlocking access to Formula E races in the process. The company’s first-ever live sports rights package will not only provide users with the option to watch live races for free, but also on-demand replays as well.
While Formula E might not be as high profile as Formula 1, it is growing in terms of viewership and attention. According to an announcement from October of last year, live viewership for the single-seater electric car motorsport championship grew to an all-time high of 216 million during its eight season.
Starting in January of next year, The Roku Channel will become “the streaming home of Formula E” in the US. According to the press release, 11 races from the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship’s tenth season will be available to watch live on The Roku Channel for free.
Roku users should also find it easy enough to access the races, considering they will be accessible directly through the Sports Experience on Roku’s Home Screen.
While eleven live races will be available to stream on The Roku Channel, that’s not all the tenth season has to offer. At the same time as confirming the Roku deal, Formula E also confirmed that it has renewed its deal with CBS to show five races. These five races are also due to be simulcast on Paramount Plus.
Of course, as the Paramount Plus app is available on Roku devices, users of a Roku player or TV will still be able to catch all of these tenth-season races by switching between apps and services as needed.
In addition to the live races, Roku users will also be able to watch a variety of Formula E on-demand content as well, including Formula E’s docu-follow series Unplugged, race previews, highlights, replays of all races, and more.
