Every current Doctor Who (series 1-13) episode is available to stream on HBO Max. With all of the Doctor Who episodes available to watch through the one streaming service, an HBO Max subscription is a cost-effective way to maintain access to the popular franchise. For those wanting access to future Doctor Who episodes (series 14 and beyond), or access to Classic Doctor Who (seasons 1-26), an HBO Max subscription won’t be much help.

Doctor Who likely needs little introduction. It is an extremely popular show and one that has been around for a considerably long time. The original Doctor Who was canceled in the 1980s after its 26th season but then returned in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as The Doctor. Since then, new Doctor Who episodes have continually been released on an almost yearly basis. Season 14 episodes, with the Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker), were released between October 2021 and April 2022.

HBO Max is the current home for every episode of season 1-13 of Doctor Who, and a standard HBO Max subscription costs $14.99 per month for an ad-free viewing experience. For those happy to sit through the ads, HBO Max also offers a cheaper, ad-supported plan, priced at $9.99 per month. Neither the ad-supported or ad-free plans currently come with a free trial, so consumers will need to pay the full monthly amount when signing up.

For reference, there is also the option to sign up for an annual plan to help save on the cost over 12 months. The ad-supported annual plan costs $99.99 per year, while the annual ad-free plan is priced at $149.99 per year. Similar to the monthly plans, a free trial is not available with HBO Max’s annual plans

Future episodes of Doctor Who (series 14 and beyond) are currently scheduled to become available to stream on Disney Plus in the United States. Doctor Who is set to return in 2023 with a new Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and those episodes will be streamed exclusively on Disney Plus worldwide. The only exceptions to this are the UK and Ireland which will continue to see Doctor Who broadcast on the BBC. The standard cost of a Disney Plus subscription is currently $7.99 per month.

Where to watch Classic Doctor Who episodes

Classic Doctor Who

For those wanting to watch classic Doctor Who episodes, basically, the First Doctor through to the Seventh, then HBO Max won’t be much help. Instead, consumers may want to consider signing up for a BritBox subscription. All 26 seasons of Classic Doctor Who are available to stream through BritBox, making it a good option for fans of the 1963-1989 Doctor.

In terms of the price, a standard BritBox subscription costs $7.99 per month. For those wanting to pay more up front to save on the cost over a year, there is also an annual plan priced at $79.99 per year. Regardless of whether signing up on a monthly or annual basis, a 7-day free trial is available.

In addition to Classic Doctor Who, BritBox subscribers get access to many other popular British TV shows, including Poirot, Fawlty Towers, Midsomer Murders, Death In Paradise, and Line Of Duty, among others. BritBox also offers its own selection of Originals, including Suspect, The Thief, His Wife And The Canoe, Redemption, Sister Boniface Mysteries, and The Long Call. For fans of British TV in general, BritBox is a good solution.

Where to stream Doctor Who: summary

For Whovians looking to stream as many episodes of Doctor Who as possible, two subscriptions are currently needed. For access to every episode of season 1 through to 13 of the current Doctor Who, an HBO Max subscription will be required. For those looking for access to every episode of season 1-26 of Classic Doctor Who, a BritBox subscription is the best option.

HBO Max plans start at $9.99 per month (or $99.99 per year) while a BritBox subscription costs $7.99 per month (or $79.99 per year). As a result, access to both Doctor Who and Classic Doctor Who at the same time will set Whovians back a minimum of $17.98 per month (or $179.98 per year).

Beginning November 2023 with the arrival of the Fifteenth Doctor (thanks to David Tennant returning as the Fourteenth Doctor), Disney Plus will become the new home of Doctor Who.
