tvOS 18 is now available as a free software update on supported Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K players. Apple announced the latest version of the operating system earlier this year, and while multiple versions have been released since then, today marks the rolling out of the public version that’s designed for use by everyone.
Although Apple TV players can be set to automatically install new updates when they’re available, it is also possible to manually check and push tvOS 18 by heading to Settings > System > Software Updates and then selecting Update Software. If the latest version is available, the user will have the option to select Download and Install.
As previously confirmed, tvOS 18 brings with it a number of upgrades and improvements. Probably most notably, the introduction of InSight. Apple’s take on Prime Video’s X-Ray provides users with more information on the video they are watching, including info on actors, characters, and music.
Other notable upgrades include an AI-driven improvement to Enhance Dialogue and the automatic enabling of subtitles when the system detects a relevant change, such as when the audio has been muted by the user. tvOS 18 also adds Portrait screensavers to Apple TV 4K.
Although the bulk of the features included with tvOS 18 are now available, users can still expect further improvements to be added over the coming months. For example, 21:9 support for playing movies and shows on projectors, as well other new screensavers, including the Snoopy screensaver, are confirmed to be coming later this year.
