While Netflix is already home to a varied library of content, the catalog looks set to become even more varied soon. This is thanks to the availability of NASA+ live programming, including the option to watch live rocket launches.
According to NASA and Netflix, NASA+ live programming will begin to become available this summer. In addition to rocket launches, Netflix subscribers will also be able to watch astronaut spacewalks, mission coverage, and even live views of Earth from the International Space Station.
NASA launched NASA+ in late 2023, and in a bid to improve accessibility to the agency’s work. This latest partnering with a streaming service is designed to improve that accessibility even more.
“The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 calls on us to share our story of space exploration with the broadest possible audience,” said Rebecca Sirmons, general manager of NASA+ at the agency’s headquarters in Washington. “Together, we’re committed to a Golden Age of Innovation and Exploration – inspiring new generations – right from the comfort of their couch or in the palm of their hand from their phone.”
With Netflix having more than 300 million subscribers globally, resulting in a reach that’s understood to be in excess of 700 million people, teaming up with Netflix is certainly an effective way to reach more people.
Although Netflix does require a paid subscription, NASA+ doesn’t. As a result, it is possible to watch all of the same NASA+ content coming to Netflix this summer for free through the NASA app or the agency’s website.
Alternatively, Amazon Prime Video is another option, thanks to the launch of a NASA+ FAST channel earlier this year.
