A new report suggests that more than half (58%) of smart TVs were used only for streaming in the first quarter of 2024. According to the latest data from Inscape, the 3% increase in streaming-only smart TV usage in Q1 2024 was the largest quarterly jump since the second quarter of 2022.
In addition to the quarter-over-quarter increase, the data suggests that streaming-only smart TV usage increased by 7% on a year-over-year basis. If going back as far as the first quarter of 2022, the increase is around 12%.
In contrast, smart TVs used only for accessing content via cable/satellite/OTA totaled 5% in Q1 2024, marking no change when compared to the previous two quarters. On a yearly basis, cable/satellite/OTA-only smart TV usage decreased by 1%.
Completing the data set, 38% of smart TVs were used for both streaming and cable/satellite/OTA during the first quarter of the year. This represented a decline of 2% on the previous quarter, and a decline of around 5% when compared to the first quarter of 2023.
Total streaming time by smart TVs that only or mostly streamed content increased as well. At 94% in Q1 2024, this represented a 1% increase on the previous quarter. Similar to the previous quarter, however, the report found no change in the number of smart TV apps used, with around 5.5 apps used per TV in Q1 2024.
The report also found that streaming accounted for 24.4% of live linear viewing time during the quarter. While an increase on the 18.2% reported for Q1 2024, this represented a decline on the 25.8% reported for the fourth quarter of 2023.
For reference, Inscape’s results and takeaways are based on viewing data from more than 23 million opted-in Vizio devices that were active
over a period of 365 days.
