The FreeCast app is now available to download on Roku devices, offering Roku users another option for accessing a selection of FAST and paid live TV channels. However, the app is limited to just the live experience for now.
Similar to The Roku Channel, FreeCast offers access to a wide selection of free channels (more than 500). For those that want access to more premium channels, FreeCast’s Value Choice package starts at $3.99 a month and unlocks an additional eighteen channels, including FETV, FMC, INSP, and Reelz. The Value Channels package also adds a DVR at no additional cost.
In discussing the launch of the app, FreeCast founder and CEO William Mobley suggested the Roku version of the app is more than just another streaming app.
“Roku is unique; they were one of the first to foresee the shift to streaming, and build technology to support that, rather than just throw Android on a set-top box. In that way, they’re a lot like FreeCast. We’re not just launching another VOD app, we’re building a complete media experience for consumers and solution for the media industry, so we’ve had to be thoughtful in how we approach this platform,” said Mobley.
While FreeCast also offers access to a selection of on-demand content as well, this is something that’s not available through the Roku app at launch. Instead, FreeCast says the app will gain additional features, including the company’s VOD library, as part of a future update.
“Now we’re ready to launch the first piece of that experience on Roku devices with a roadmap for bringing our full offering there, added Mobley.
For those without a Roku player, the FreeCast app is also available to download on a variety of other devices and platforms, including Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Samsung TVs, and LG TVs.
