Google has now officially rebranded Google TV‘s ‘Free TV Channels‘ as ‘Google TV Freeplay.’ Along with the rebrand, the live TV experience on Google TV devices now comes with an updated channel guide for easier navigation.

The use of the Google TV Freeplay name had been expected. Following a report earlier this year from 9to5 Google, the new name had started showing up on some devices over the past few weeks.

While still not available on all Google TV devices, Google has confirmed a transition to the Freeplay branding as part of a wider set of upgrades that are rolling out to Google TV devices beginning today. The new features are arriving a day ahead of the launch of the new Google TV Streamer.

Google originally launched its Free TV Channels feature on Google TV devices in early 2023. Since then, Google has slowly been building out its list of free, ad-supported TV channels. Earlier this year, for example, Google added another 10 channels, including Ion Plus, Johnny Carson TV and The FBI Files.

As reported by 9to5 Google last week, another seven channels were recently added to the lineup, taking the total number available to more than 150.

With the list of free channels continually growing, Google is also now looking to make the experience easier by rolling out an updated channel guide. The new version of the guide includes additional filters, making it easier to narrow down the list to a specific genre or topic.
