Plex is set to increase the price of its Plex Pass next month. While many streaming services have increased in price, and often on a yearly basis, Plex isn’t one that has upped the price that often. In fact, the company notes this will be its first price increase in ten years.
The price change takes effect on April 29, 2025. At which point, the cost of a monthly Plex Pass will increase by $2 a month, up from $4.99 to $6.99. Likewise, the annual plan will increase by $30 a year, up from $39.99 to $69.99.
One of the good things about Plex is that consumers can just pay once for a Plex Pass subscription and be done forever. For those that do prefer this option, the cost of a Lifetime Plex Pass is set to increase by $130, up from $119.99 to $249.99.
A recap of those price changes:
Plex | Old | New |
---|---|---|
Monthly | $4.99 | $6.99 |
Annual | $39.99 | $69.99 |
Lifetime | $119.99 | $249.99 |
The increase not only applies to new subscribers, but existing subscribers as well, with the exception being those that are already signed up for a Lifetime Plex pass.
Similar to new subscribers, existing Plex Pass subscribers can expect their price to increase on or after April 29, 2025, depending on their individual billing date.
Plex says the increase is something that has to happen to ensure it can continue offering the service it does.
“In order for us to keep up with rising costs and remain committed to ensuring both Plex Pass and our support for personal media continue to thrive—it’s time.”
In addition to the existing features already offered, Plex says the price increase will also help in developing new features and improvements. These include:
- A valuable integration (parents, we see you!) with Common Sense Media featuring extras for Plex Pass holders.
- A new bespoke server management app that works on browsers or mobile clients for a better curation experience with more visibility into who is on your server, and how.
- An open and documented API for server integrations, along with the ability to create custom metadata agents.
As existing Lifetime subscribers are not affected by the price increase, it might be worth considering signing up for a Lifetime subscription. For example, now through April 29, Plex will continue to offer a Lifetime subscription at $119.99, which is $50 more than the annual plan will cost following the price increase.
As demonstrated by this price increase, it would also be expected that those signing up for a Lifetime subscription will avoid any future price increases as well.
