Roku is up for sale. That’s according to a new report which says the company has been actively engaging in talks to sell itself. While the report highlights Roku is exploring a sale, that doesn’t mean the company will ultimately be sold.
What You Need to Know
- Roku has reportedly held talks with at least one U.S. media company about the potential of a sale.
- Although the company appears to be exploring the possibility of selling itself, no decision has been made.
- While Roku devices are widespread, the company’s advertising reach and business could prove particularly attractive to buyers.
Roku is a massive player in the streaming world. While the company’s devices are in millions of homes around the U.S., it is actually the company’s advertising and subscription business that generates the lion’s share of its revenue.
The Roku Channel, for example, is one of the most-widely used free streaming services, a sub-sector of the industry that has seen amazing growth in recent years.
It is this advertising and distribution side of the business that could ultimately prove appealing to a prospective buyer. And, according to a new report by Bloomberg, Roku has already actively held talks to sell itself.
Citing “people with knowledge of the matter,” the report also says Roku has discussed the possibility of combining with at least one US media company.
While this would all seem to suggest that Roku will eventually be sold, that’s not strictly the case. The report makes clear that no final decision on selling has been made and there’s no guarantee talks will lead to a sale.
Earlier this year, Roku confirmed the number of Streaming Households (its terminology for active accounts) surpassed 100 million. The company also confirmed more than 38 billion streaming hours in Q1 2026 alone.
A potential sale of the company would not only be interesting from the Roku perspective but also from the Frndly TV perspective. Roku acquired Frndly TV in 2025, marking its full entry into the pay-TV market, and opening another avenue of potential revenue.
