Venu Sports, a new sports-streaming service from Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery, is due to launch later this year. While details on the service are still a little limited, Lowpass has spotted a beta web-based version of the smart TV app, which suggests the service will launch with a number of premium features, including a DVR and multiview support.
One of the big selling points with the new service is access to live sports events. With the ability to watch live, it stands to reason that subscribers would benefit from also having access to a DVR. According to the report, a DVR looks likely to be available, offering the ability to record individual events to watch later.
Multiview has become another increasing popular live sports feature, with both Fubo and YouTube TV now offering their own versions. The web-based smart TV app suggests the ability to watch more than one live sports stream at the same time will also be available with Venu Sports. However, it remains unclear just how customizable the multiview experience will be, and especially at launch.
Similar to other apps, it is expected that the Venu app will launch in to a typical For You section where subscribers can quickly access some of the more popular live events, a selection of ‘must watch‘ recommendations, and DVR recommendations. It also seems likely now that the app will offer the ability to filter content based on league, including filters for MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL among others.
For those that don’t find what they are looking for on the For You page, subscribers are expected to have access to Live (including a typical EPG) and Browse sections as well.
While the report does detail a good number of features that appear to be in development, the price continues to remain unknown. Previously, there had been suggestions that the cost could be in excess of $40 a month.
Even though this will make Venu Sports a relatively expensive streaming service, sports fans may find the cost to be reasonable if it means they no longer have to pay for a live TV package as well, and especially if they also get access to additional premium features popular with sports fans.
