The Android 14 update is now in the process of rolling out to Chromecast with Google TV devices. As a reminder, Google opted to skip Android 13, so this upgrade sees the operating system jumping straight from Android 12 to Android 14.
The update is rolling out as UTTC.241218.004 and weighs in at 809 MB, according to posts on Reddit and 9to5 Google. Those wanting to apply the update as soon as possible can check if it is ready to download and install through System update (under About) in the System section of the settings menu.
Alternatively, existing Chromecast with Google TV users can simply wait for the update to arrive organically on their device and then apply it.
One point to note before updating is that some users have reported that their external storage drive stopped working (no longer recognized) after applying the Android 14 upgrade. While this won’t affect the majority of users, it is something to keep in mind if currently using an external storage device with the Chromecast with Google TV.
In terms of the improvements, and along with updating the operating system to Android 14, the upgrade includes the January 2025 security patch. The upgrade also includes support for the Google TV Streamer remote’s Find My Remote and Customizable Button features.
Even though this update is rolling out to the Chromecast with Google TV, it is possible to buy the Google TV Streamer’s remote separately and pair it with an existing Chromecast with Google TV player.
For those that have paired the newer remote with the older Chromecast device, it now looks like this Android update will unlock those two newer remote features.
As to be expected, the upgrade also includes the usual ‘system stability and improvements‘ as well, so devices users can also expect some minor improvements to the user experience.
