Discovery+ offers access to shows from many popular networks and select Verizon customers can watch free for up to twelve months. As to be expected, there are a few caveats to a free subscription, including the type of Verizon customer that’s eligible to begin with, as well as how long of a free subscription they are entitled to.
Discovery+ is the new home of a number of Discovery-owned networks, including Discover Channel, Animal Planet, HGTV, ID, and more. With all of these networks available through the one app and subscription, and without the need for a live TV package, it’s a great option to consider.
A standard Discovery+ subscription costs $4.99 per month. However, this is an ad-supported plan. For those looking for an ad-free experience, the price of the subscription increases to $6.99 per month. For Verizon customers, they can secure up to twelve months of ad-free Discovery+ for free, providing they meet the eligibility requirements.
Who’s eligible for Discovery+ Verizon deal
The Verizon customers that are most likely to be able to secure a free Discovery+ subscription are mobile customers Essentially, customers signed up to any of the following Verizon Unlimited cellular plans qualify for the promotion:
- Start Unlimited
- Play More Unlimited
- Do More Unlimited
- Get More Unlimited
- Above Unlimited
- Go Unlimited
- Beyond Unlimited
- Verizon Plan Unlimited
While an eligible plan is one thing, the type of plan also determines the length of the free subscription. For example, only some plans are eligible for the full twelve months while the others get six months of Discovery+ for free.
Below is a breakdown of which Verizon plans get twelve months and which get six.
|6 Months Free||12 Months Free|
|Start Unlimited||Play More Unlimited|
|Do More Unlimited||Get More Unlimited|
|Verizon Plan Unlimited|
Lastly, the above eligibility requirements only apply to personal Verizon accounts. Unfortunately, Verizon business accounts are not eligible.
Is Discovery+ included with Verizon Fios?
Technically, Verizon Fios and 5G Home Internet customers are also eligible for twelve months of Discovery+ for free, but that’s only if they are new customers.
Verizon is currently only offering the Discovery+ promotion to internet customers when signing up for the first time. Therefore, all existing Fios and 5G Home Internet customers are not eligible for this promotion.
If the Fios or 5G Home Internet customer also happens to get their cellular service from Verizon, and are paying for one of the unlimited plans listed in the previous section, then they will be able to add a free Discovery+ subscription to their account.
How to sign up for Verizon’s Discovery+ deal
Providing an individual meets the above requirements, then getting Discovery+ for free is fairly simple and just requires adding it to their Verizon account.
One of the easiest ways to do this is through the My Verizon mobile app. For those that don’t already have the app installed, it can be downloaded on an iPhone from the App Store or on an Android phone from Google Play.
How to get Discovery+ for free through app:
- Tap “More”
- Tap “Add-ons & Apps”
- Tap “Entertainment”
- Select “Learn more” (under Discovery+)
- Tap “Enroll”
- Tap “Confirm”
- Tap “Go to discovery+”
- Enter an email address and create a password
- Tap “Agree and continue”
In between some of the steps, the user will be asked to read through the changes to their account and agree to the terms and conditions for both Verizon and Discovery+. Also, the email address and password will be the ones used to access Discovery+ once the subscription has been set up.
Once all done, the Verizon customer can simply download the Discovery+ app on their preferred streaming device, sign in using the same email address and password and start watching. Alternatively, head to the Discovery+ website in a browser, sign in and start streaming.
What to know before signing up
Besides the eligibility requirements, there are some additional caveats to be aware of. The first and most important is that by signing up through Verizon, auto-enrollment is enabled by default. In other words, once the free period comes to an end, the subscription will automatically convert to a paid subscription.
Furthermore, as this is an ad-free subscription, that means the consumer will automatically start being charged the higher $6.99 per month rate, unless they cancel Discovery+ before the discounted period ends. Unlike paying Discovery+ subscribers who have the option to cancel directly through the streaming service, Verizon subscribers will need to cancel their Discovery+ subscription through Verizon. This can be done by following the same instructions above, but removing the subscription instead of adding it.
Another caveat is this is a limited time deal. Verizon is only offering the option to get six or twelve months of Discovery+ for free up until may 31, 2021. Unless extended, the deal won’t be available following this date.
As a final caveat, this is one subscription per Verizon account. Therefore, if a family or household pays for multiple lines through the same Verizon account, each line won’t be able to set up their own Discovery+ service. Instead, all of the different Verizon lines will need to share the one single Discovery+ subscription and login details.
Discovery+ Verizon deal summary
Select Verizon customers can get up to twelve months of Discovery+ for free. This deal is mainly open to Verizon unlimited cellular customers and the exact length of the free period will depend on the Unlimited plan. Although the deal is also open to Verizon internet customers, it is only available to new Fios and 5G customers and not existing ones.
Activating the free Discovery+ subscription needs to be done through Verizon and not Discovery+ and will need to be canceled through Verizon as well. Once the promotional period ends, Verizon customers will automatically have their subscription changed to a paid subscription, unless they cancel first.
