Google Fixes Chromecast ‘Untrusted’ Issue, Rolls Out Google Home App Update For Factory Reset Devices

John Finn Avatar

Last week it became clear that a certification issue was plaguing a number of Chromecast devices, causing them to be identified as ‘untrusted’ devices. Google has confirmed the problem is now fixed.

As explained last week, the issue affected Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices, not newer Chromecast models including the Chromecast with Google TV. The issue resulted in the inability for affected devices to connect to nearby devices, rendering them unusable.

After initially confirming the problem had been identified and a fix was rolling out, Google is now in the process of emailing affected customers to confirm the issue is considered resolved, as of today.

Thank you for your patience as we worked to resolve the issue with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices. As of today, this disruption has been fixed.”

Google email.

For those that that had not previously factory reset their device in an attempt to fix the issue, Google says there is nothing for them to do and their devices should now function as normal.

For any devices that are still experiencing the issue (and not factory reset), Google advises confirming the device’s firmware version on this list. Any devices running a firmware version not on the list will need to be restarted in order to initiate an update.

Google Home App Update For Factory Reset Chromecast

For those that had previously factory reset an affected Chromecast as part of the troubleshooting process, and now unable to use the device at all, the fix is a little more complicated.

Essentially, those users will need to update the Google Home app on their mobile device to the latest version (3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS). Following the update, mobile users should be able to use the Google Home app on their mobile device to re-set up the affected Chromecast (2nd gen) or Chromecast Audio.

Google has also explained that the latest version of the Google Home app only began rolling out today, and that it may take up to a few days for the rollout to complete.
