The Apple TV app with access to Apple TV+ has now arrived on 2019 LG smart TVs. LG TVs typically run on the company’s own smart TV platform, webOS. The announcement marks an expansion of the Apple TV app to existing LG devices in more than 80 countries.
At this year’s CES event in Las Vegas, LG announced its latest lineup of smart TVs for the 2020 season. When these new TVs go on sale they will come preloaded with the Apple TV app. During the CES announcement, LG confirmed the Apple TV app would also make its way to older LG TV models in due course.
Today, LG confirmed the expansion of the Apple TV app to older LG TVs is now starting to take place. Originally, LG explained the app will be coming to both 2019 and 2018 LG TVs, although the current announcement is only for the 2019 models. The 2018 TVs are expected to receive Apple TV app support “later this year” following an over-the-air firmware update.
The 2019 LG smart TVs that are gaining access to Apple TV now include the company’s NanoCell TVs (series SM9X and SM8X) and OLED TVs. LG UHD TVs (series UM7X and UM6X) are expected to gain Apple TV app support later in the month.
Apple TV adds Apple’s streaming service
The Apple TV app is a one-stop shop for most things streaming. For example, app users can buy or rent episodes and movies and stream them directly through the app at any time. In addition, the Apple TV app also lets users subscribe to a selection of channels and have the cost processed by Apple. Channels available as an Apple TV subscription include CBS All Access, Cinemax, Epix, HBO, Showtime, among others.
With LG smart TVs gaining access to the Apple TV app, smart TV owners will also now be able to stream Apple TV+ without the need for any additional hardware, such as a set-top box. Apple TV+ is Apple’s new streaming service that provides access to Apple original movies and shows, including See, Servant and The Morning Show.
An Apple TV+ subscription currently costs $4.99 per month following a seven-day free trial.
